An enactive approach to learning mathematical content aims to help students build a mental network to understand and recognise mathematical concepts and relationships. Consequently, enactive methods help to increase the understanding and attractiveness of mathematics. They can also reduce underachievement of learners based on lack of understanding.

The implementation of an enactive approach to learning mathematics in a digital learning environment is based on two prerequisites: (1) Teachers have the pedagogical skills to use enactive methods. (2) Materials for enactive work in distance learning or home-based exercises are available or can be obtained without much effort.

The present project "Enactive Learning in Mathematics at Home (EnLeMaH)" aims to promote the acquisition of innovative digital pedagogical skills for teachers of functional mathematics. This is achieved by enabling teachers to:

(a) implement an enactive teaching and learning methodology in the area of functional relationships at lower secondary level in a digitally comprehensible and attractive way.

b) guide pupils in the creation of enactive materials from the home environment and support their learning processes.

The EnLeMaH project focuses on building pedagogical competences by teachers in order to develop an enactive methodology with regard to distance or home-based teaching.

To achieve this goal, EnLeMaH adopts the following specific objectives (outputs -O-):

O1 - Guidelines for enactive mathematical learning at home:

  • Definition of the EnLeMaH methodological framework;
  • Produce the Guidelines for Enactive Mathematical Learning at Home, which describes the methodological framework of EnLeMaH and the different strategies/aspects that mathematics teachers need to take into account when guiding pupils in creating enactive learning products with household goods;
  • Focus group to present the methodological framework and guidelines;
  • Collection of results and fine-tuning.
  • O1 report

O2 - Online teacher training course "Applying the EnLeMaH methodology":

  • Design of the structure and methodology of the in-service training course;
  • Preparation of the content of the teacher training course and the exercise/learning materials (short videos and text files/documents for teacher training);
  • Development of a prototype of the online teacher training course;
  • Evaluation and collection of results and fine-tuning;
  • O2 report

O3 - EnLeMaH repository of enactive learning material:

  • Definition of the features of the repository;
  • Development of the project website and repository;
  • Content integration;
  • Piloting and fine-tuning;
  • O3 report
